Sometimes a glittering career hides some of the most heartbreaking stories. Lolo Jones, who won the USA and World championships in hurdle events in 2013, been able to achieve this level through a great deal of effort and patience. Born to a single mother in a family of five kids, Jones had a difficult and poor growing up. Jones's mother travelled frequently and lived in a church basement. It was a life that required Jones to change schools and attend a new school every calendar year, up to the point she started the high school. While at Theodore Roosevelt High School Jones did not live with her mother in order to take on running events. The family she lived with was diverse in high school so she could be capable of focusing on her academics. Jones received an award called the Gatorade Iowa Track and Field Athlete of the Year Award in high school. She was an active member of the school orchestra, being a cello player.
